The name, Coatlus duodecapteryx, simply means “coatl with twelve wings” in almost-but-not-quite-scientific latin. Eight eyes, twelve wings, a masklike face…this was quite a bit of fun to draw, and I deliberately worked to keep it loose and gestural whenever possible.

This piece was drawn freehand using croquil dip pens in two sizes, and a small brush for fills and washes. The composition and anatomy aren’t great, but I’m definitely feeling more self-assured in my draughtsmanship with a dip pen or brush. Some kind of underdrawing would have helped the weak points.
